The Princeton Festival is a celebration of the performing arts – jazz, opera, chamber singers and more – and it starts this week! Get an operatic preview of the festival on Thursday night at Princeton Public Library, when actors present scenes from ‘Porgy and Bess,’ followed by a discussion with the directors. FREE, 7:30pm. The festival kicks off on Friday at 2pm in Hinds Plaza. Get the full scoop on the festival here.

 

Two unlikely companions, one award winning story. The Ewing Library presents a free screening of ‘Philomena,’ a movie about a weary reporter who ends up on a story about a woman’s quest to find the long lost son she had given up for adoption. (Starring Dame Judi Dench at her finest!) FREE, 6:30pm 61 Scotch Road, Ewing.

 

Love a good book? Love a good sale? Head to Labyrinth Books on Nassau Street to shop this Thursday! Bargain, used and sale books will be marked down as part of their book drive. Pick up a few things for your summer reading! Starts at Thursday at 9am and continues through the weekend.

 

Friday, June 6
Stroll the sidewalks of Princeton, and stop in to a cafe to sip espresso and enjoy fine art. It’s the opening reception of a group art show at Small World Coffee. Over 30 artists from the Creative Collective of Mercer County present work in oil, watercolor, acrylic painting, stone and collage. FREE, 6-8pm.

 

Spring’s wildflowers are in bloom, and the butterflies are busy! One of our favorite places to walk and appreciate our natural surroundings. Join a naturalist from the Mercer County Park Commission for a guided butterfly walk for all levels and learn about the winged wonders. Head to Mercer Meadows on Blackwell Road and start exploring. FREE, 1-3pm.

The Thrill of the Grill! Stop by the store by 6/30 and check out the awesome grill on display in the floral vestibule. Like it? It could be yours! Enter to win the grill or other great grilling prizes, courtesy of Whole Foods Market and H&H Appliance Center in East Windsor.

Saturday, June 7
The local farmer’s market season is in high gear! It’s the opening day for Pennington Farmer’s Market, held from 9-1pm at Rosedale Mills on Rt. 31 in Pennington. Or, head to the Montgomery Farmer’s Market at the Village Shopping Center on Route 206, also 9-1pm. Support our area growers & producers, and keep our communities thriving – shop locally!

Sunday, June 8
Everyone’s favorite green ogre comes to life on the stage of Mercer County Community College’s Kelsey Theater. The players present ‘Shrek’ – a musical comedy based on the beloved films. $20, 2pm.
