In celebration of the centenary of Benjamin Britten, the Princeton Girlchoir New Jersey will perform his beloved works for treble choruses including A Ceremony of Carols, Missa Brevis in D, Op. 63, Psalm 150, Op. 67 and other favorites. This concert will feature treble works, both secular and sacred, composed by Benjamin Britten. A Ceremony of Carols, Op. 28 which is scored for three-part treble chorus, solo voices, and harp was composed in 1942 while Britten was at sea, going from the United States to England. It is a choral piece of eleven movements written in Middle English. The poetry in this piece is rich and varied, ranging from tender lullabies to the new born baby, depictions of Mother Mary as a rose and a freezing, winter night.
Princeton Girlchoir Cantores and Concert Choir will perform Britten’s stunning setting of the Mass for three-part chorus, soloists and accompanied on organ by Derrick Goff. Princeton Girlchoir Ensemble, under the baton of Artistic Director Lynnel Joy Jenkins, will perform A Ceremony of Carols, Op. 28 accompanied by Dr. André C. Tarantiles. Referred to as an “an expert harpist,” by The New York Times, Dr. Tarantiles has concertized throughout the United States and has performed as soloist in all the major concert halls of New York City. Princeton Girlchoir Concert Choir will perform Britten’s psalm setting, Psalm 150, Op. 67 for two-part treble chorus and instrumentalists. Princeton Girlchoir Cantores will perform other choral favorites by Mozart, René Clausen, Welsh composer Paul Mealor, and PGC’s own Associate Director, Tom T. Shelton, Jr. The concert will conclude with the Princeton Girlchoir and alumnae singing Britten’s A New Year Carol.
The concert will take place Sunday, December 8 at 3:00 p.m., at the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, 2688 Main Street, Lawrenceville, NJ.
