This may seem a tad blasphemous, but I am really looking forward to donning my favorite jeans again without breaking into a sweat just thinking about them. It’s a bit scary to think that fall is already fast approaching, and that it’s almost time to start switching over our closets for the inevitably cooler weather. August is the best month to pick up some great transitional pieces to fit the fall trends, since most stores are still carrying a good summer/fall mix. Luckily for us in Princeton, we have a lot of fantastic shopping options right in town! Here is my breakdown of the most exciting fall trends and where to get them!
Since Jenna Lyons took over as its president and creative director in 2010, the brand has taken a more sophisticated and quirky turn, distinguishing itself for truly fashionable looks and no longer just preppy staples. Our Palmer Square store has an incredible selection and really accommodates Princeton’s unique mix of preppy/hipster/chic shoppers. Turn here for classic blazers and trousers, but choose bright colors and jewel tones for an unexpected twist. Also take a peek at their newer line of shoes. Their iconic ballet flats are very multi-seasonal as are their menswear-inspired flat and high-heeled loafers.
If you’re into modern designers and willing to pay, Zoe is unquestionably the place for very current high fashion. They carry a huge array of designers from Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s line, Elizabeth and James, to Diane Von Furstenberg, Lanvin, Rag & Bone, and Alexander Wang. Invest here in some high quality and timeless outerwear, handbags, and shoes. Camel coats, wool capes, pointy-toe pumps, and top-handle purses are all noteworthy fall trends, but classic enough to serve as investment pieces for many seasons to come.
As a brand, Kate Spade has developed hugely loyal clientele for their unmatched customer service and feminine yet quirky designs. For this fall, head over for some fantastic party and work dresses, funky statement jewelry, and an ever-changing selection of handbags. It’s easy to continue the summer’s color blocking trend by incorporating bright bangles, necklaces, or cocktail rings into your wardrobe, and this store always has some fun pieces! For this season’s bags, luxe textures like snakeskin and crocodile will be popular, and Kate Spade is utilizing both in a variety of shapes and styles.
This high-end boutique situated next to the public library is best known for its fantastic selection of premium denim brands such as Hudson, J Brand, Paige, and many more! In addition, they also carry some of the best beauty lines available in Princeton, most notably KAI and Philosophy. High-waisted and flared denim styles are back in full force this fall, and Rouge has tons of options to try on and choose from! Just make sure to select darker washes with no whiskering to maximize figure-flattery and keep the look from appearing too 70’s!
Most definitely my favorite thrift store in town. It is smaller and more curated than other similar consignment stores around, and therefore easier and less stressful to browse. The popularity of the AMC show Mad Men has inspired a huge wave of vintage revival, in apparel, bags, and jewelry. Jane is the perfect place to pick up costumey clip-on earrings, faux fur coats, and even a great bag if you’re lucky. Try incorporating one or two thrifted pieces into your fall outfits to give them a fun vintage touch while still remaining modern. Consignment stores are less trend-based and organized, so it can take patience to find something that fits your personal style, but Jane always has treasures to discover!
